Robotics for Younger Kids

FIRST robotics is a great opportunity for kids of any age. While FRC is only for high school students, FIRST has FIRST Lego League / FIRST Lego League Jr. (FLL/FLLJr.) for elementary students and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) for middle school students.  If you’re interested in starting a new FLL or FTC team, please get in touch with us.  We love to mentor and assist new teams!

FIRST LEGO League Basics

  • Elementary school kids build and program LEGO Mindstorms robots and do a research project
  • Students learn engineering and programming skills as well as creativity, teamwork, and perseverance
  • Teams are up to 10 students and 2 adult mentors
  • Build season is from August to October. Competitions continue over the winter
  • Competitions are exciting, sports-like events
  • Teams can be from a school or a classroom, or just a group of kids from the community
  • Can use a basement or other space to build
  • Initial cost is around $1,000. Grants and sponsorships are available

FIRST Tech Challenge Basics

  • Middle school kids design, build, and program small robots from scratch
  • Students learn engineering, design, and programming skills as well as creativity, teamwork, and perseverance
  • Teams are 10-15 students and several adult mentors
  • Build season from September to November. Competitions from November to May.
  • Competitions are exciting, sports-like events where lots of teams can meet and compete
  • Teams can be from a school or from a neighborhood
  • Initial cost is around $1,500. Many grants are available
